About us...

Nith Valley Free Range Eggs, based just north of Dumfries, is home to some 9,000 of the best laying hybrids around.
Lohmann Browns and Hi-line, out of Rhode Island Reds, join the farm at point of lay, about 16 weeks.
Laying around 8,000 eggs a day, they are hitting a 96 per cent return, two per cent more than Lohmann actually claim.
That’s perhaps and endorsement of the small flock sizes which ensure better bird welfare.
The hens are housed in four state of the art mobile sheds which are regularly moved around the field so the birds can enjoy fresh surroundings.
The sheds are totally self-sufficient, powered by wind and solar energy through a bank of 12 volt batteries that run the feed lines, lighting system and auto ejects which ensure the birds don’t spend the night in nesting boxes and thus keep them clean.
A conveyor system takes the eggs to a sorting station where they are packed ready for delivery.
Nith Valley Free Range Eggs are primarily distributed through Scotlay eggs to major firms like Sainsbury.
They are also delivered to local shops and restaurants around the region which a new doorstep delivery service has been launched in and around Dumfries.

Stuart Rutherford, owner of Nith Valley Free Range Eggs, is a young man who has
already tasted success. His eggs have been voted amongst the top five for quality in
Scotland and the company was runner up in the region Prince’s Trust small business
awards in 2010 when Stuart was just 26. Stuart was just 16 when he first took an
interest in poultry production. After studying at the Scottish Agricultural College
in Ayr where he gained an HND in poultry production and management, he became
a trainee manager with Grampian Country Chickens at Aberdeen. Two years later he
was back at Ayr managing a free range egg company. That gave him the experience
to head out on his own.
